yes it is illegal but can't you file for lost title or abandoned vehicle, something along those lines, and then get it right?

If not I think if you talk to the dmv they could run a title search for the cab you want to use, and get you one, or just make a reconstructed one or something.

sure the right thing to do is go to the dmv. what you probably could do and no one would ever know is drill the rivets out swap it using the correct rivets (rosette rivets). and take pics of the complete cab swap so you have proof its not stolen.

it is not illegal if you have titles for both, it will need to be safety inspected and will be issued a new vin, its basically a hobbyist build and is a pain to get approved, now i know years ago it made the constructed vehicle a vehicle of the current model year and needed to meet current emmision standards, not sure if that is still the case.

not all vehicles use those rivets, ford was a good one for making things easy, the vin was on the drivers door in old trucks so you just swap doors, escorts had the vin plain riveted to removable plastic trim on the inner windshield trim

Things like that completely depend on the state.

I appreciate all the LEGAL help guys....but Im hoping to find out HOW to get to the VIN tag so I can do the swap, not sweating the legality... If I was gonna chop it shrink it or extend it this legal chat would be moot... lets pretend its a crash repair and move the help in that direction please! Im dying to tear into this beast! lol
