i did this today, we didnt have as much of a gap as that, take an impact and impact it until the impact stops, if the pitman isnt seated properly it will come loose regardless of the lock washer or not.
after impacting. we did both preloads while it was out as well, then line up bolts to the frame tighten those, attach the center link then the steering shaft. takes about 20 minutes total.
