This is good info about the flywheel and clutch. My truck originally had an SM465, so when I did the engine swap I put a new flywheel and clutch in with it. I kept the same flywheel and clutch when I swapped in the ‘92 NV4500 MT8 (external slave cylinder and 6.3:1 1st gear). Fast forward a year, the clutch was shot so I had it, throwout bearing, and shift fork replaced. I also swapped the original SM465 master / slave cylinders for the NV4500 ones. Now the clutch is chattering when starting from a stop so I’m thinking this clutch is almost gone. I must have the wrong flywheel for this setup now.

1990 K2500. I bought a ‘92 K2500 to use as a donor. Both 350 TBI engines.

Both 8 lug, 8600# gvwr. I should have gotten a picture of them side by side. Both RCLB, same light blue, except the other truck had a lot more paint left on the body panels haha.

No need for a picture. the NV4500 MT8 came out in late 1992 and the NV3500 came in early 1993. Are you wanting to Mount the NV4500 on the 90 modal?

It’s already there. Been there for about a year and a half. Went through a rebuild this summer. I think I have a flywheel and clutch mismatch though, because it’s eating clutches in just over a year.

Are you using the 1990 clutch and flywheel? If not, use a 1993 2500HD clutch flywheel and see how that feels. Also make sure you are replacing the brass bushing in the engine block where the input shaft goes in. there is a special pull you can borrow from Oreillys and autozone.

The flywheel was new and specced to work with an SM465 when I did an engine swap about 4 years ago. The pilot bushing was replaced with the throwout bearing and shift fork about 2 years ago. It will only be driven occasionally through the winter, so maybe I’ll find a shop that can get it all straightened out next spring.

What I have learned is the NV3500 MG5 and NV4500 RT8 share the same clutch and flywheel when mated to a 5.7. It changed in 1998 when the transmissions went to internal slave cylinder. Also, the clutches where not shared between the NV3500 MG5 (M50 for s10) and the NV4500 MW3.

The engines never changed from 87 (square body) to 1998. I suggest throwing a 1993/1994 clutch and flywheel and that will solve your problem. When I drop my LQ4 402 stroker down in there I have to use the 2004 clutch and flywheel since the blocks are a little different but both use the same bell housing. the SM465 is a great tranny but lacks the top gear. I would have used a gearvendors on it. You just cant use the gearvendors while in 4 x 4.

The link in my signature is to the truck I did the swap.
