leather dash and door panels need advice

I have done a little googling and lots people say its hard to get leather to stick to plastic. True or false?

With the right prep, vinyl can be made to stick to plastic. My console in my '98 is vinyl covered. 7 or 8 years old. Hasn't let go yet.
Leather will stick better because it's porous. Vinyl isn't.

I'd like to, but I'm not doing one right now. Gonna demonstrate it by drawing it out with chalk on my dash!
