But on the subject of 454s ,you may well be right, however the outlier would be the 454SS which came with the TH400 at first and 4L80E later (MT1 RPO) so there is precedent for putting heavy duty power line into lighter trucks with 5600 GVWR.
You may have misunderstood what I wrote, or maybe I could have worded it better: what I mean is they did not combine the 454 with the light duty transmissions. The TH400 and 4L80E that were used in the 454SS of course are heavy duty transmissions; the 2500"LD" comes with a 700R4/4L60E and they would not put a 454 in front of that in a factory combo.

Actually... I had a bunch of time today to do research on my own based on order sheets, and this is not exactly the case for C2500 light duty trucks, where in 1997 you could get L56 option 6.5TD with the MT1 option in CC20753 chassis option (Fleetside ext cab) with 7200 GWVR (C5Z option).

However I am disappointed that I only found conflicting information with regards to the 454s, whether they would've actually built one or not. The order sheets don't list it strictly and there are various restrictions but this figure suggests they would have sold it, as N/A is listed for 1500s but 0% is listed for 2500 lights as pictured here:

Then again it is not always a question of what is fact but what is convincing so on one hand it might be best not to dig any deeper into this issue.

So I've saw a sale listing for a 2500L/D 6 six lug truck (7200gvw) with a tbi 454 that was factory, I took a triple take at it. Now I'm wondering what the vin is.
Here is the listing:https://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/d/91-gmcx4-454-runs-great-no/6549109197.html
Nothing in that ad claims the 454 was factory. His entire wording: "I have a 91 gmc 2500 excab 4x4 454 runs great but only drives in reverse i came out to drive it one day and it wouldnt move $1000 cash bring a trailer"

That dual stud setup on the TBI for the air cleaner implies later model than 1991 (1994-1995), but not a firm clue since anything can have been swapped around since the truck was new.

And yes, I'd like to see the VIN, too. :)

I 2nd this, also the fact that the trans is toast is another red flag that somebody may have mated it to a 4l60.

Still interesting if it was original, somebody should get a hold of him to get some more pics of the tags.

Just further anecdotal notes: I found several pics of 1991 model 454's that had the single stud air cleaner, and some 1992's that had the dual stud. I haven't personally owned a bunch of TBI big blocks so I had to go look; all I really remember 100% is my 1995 454 had dual.

The VIN of that guy's would tell the engine story easily; 8th digit N = 454, though I suspect it'll be K = 5.7, or even H = 5.0 (unlikely.)

If not decoding the VIN through dealer or compnine, we'd need the SPID label to tell what transmission it came with, assuming the SPID was legible, which is often not the case in the 1988-1994 interior because the sticker gets beat up in the glovebox...and that it was matching VIN original to the truck (dash/glovebox liner hasn't been swapped out; it happens.)

Again 99.9% there's no way it's an original 454 but that 0.1% doubt would be I know that I don't know everything! :D Hey; I didn't believe they actually produced 3500HD's with the 5.7, just on paper not in the real world, but a very *VERY* few have shown up with a VIN that supports it.

One silly question: The truck discussed above is a GMC. Is it possible they have offered different option packages than Chevy, despite the building blocks being the same?

So that guy posted multiple ads and another ad says it's a 4l80. Also reverse only is a 4l80 failure I've seen a couple times before. Maybe I'll try to get ahold of him. I could use a parts truck....
