Providing more information to the original problem is probably fine, although in this case way too late for the original poster (OP). When you post something like "hope this helps" on a 10 year old thread, it just looks like you're blindly posting without paying attention to what you're doing. It's also something spammers tend to do.... although we don't get the detail you provided, so I'm not saying you're a spammer.

Many times, people revive old threads with additional questions, or wanting help with their "same issue" that is anything but the same, which is not really a logical use of a forum. A thread isn't for all information that would fall under a particular subject. That's what a subforum would be for. A thread is an individuals inquiry into a subject with all the details for their situation. Therefore it's better for a person to start a new thread detailing their own circumstances.

Situations/information that is truly the same, usually ends up in a stickied thread, or a FAQ.
