I have a 95 Chevy Silverado 2500 8 lug with a 350

my 98 350 8 lug gear indicator only shows parked in reverse neutral through first does not light up could that be an issue with my truck not wanting to go into four wheel drive and making a clicking popping noise and popping back into two wheel drive

Need a bit more info. Where is the clicking/popping noises you hear coming from? Transfer case or front axle? Do you have manual transfer case or electronic (push button)?
