Found this when changing rear diff oil!!

Hi Folks,
Since purchasing the truck and not knowing what maintenance has been done. I’ve been doing some preventative.

I purchased a new diff cover that has a drain plug. When taking the old off and cleaning, I found some large metal bits which look like parts of a roller bearing cage.

Could it be possible that it’s this destroyed and the truck still runs ok?

I have noticed a slight hum when on the throttle but goes away when letting off. Not real loud but noticeable and even more now that I’ve found this. Yes I put back together with new fluid because I just did injectors/FPR and haven’t road tested yet.

zero experience/exposure to rear differentials.

See if you find RPO “G80” in the list of three letter codes in your glovebox.

G80 indicates limited slip differential.

@b454rat notes that those diffs are known for trouble, “Grenade-lok” is the slang term for that differential.

Ok. I do have G80.
Without having any experience on this topic I’d imagine that the size pieces would equate to total bearing failure.

Changing the fluid in my 14-bolt.

Found this stuck to my magnet (3/8" ratchet for scale). Bearing cage? Normal? Everything looks good. No unusual wear on my ring gear. 4.10's, limited slip. ~290,000 miles. Never changed the fluid in the ~9.5 years I've owned it. Constructive thoughts appreciated.

Yup, looks like the same detritus as @mehcs found.

Agreed. So it sounds like if these are found it would likely be from a previous failure that was repaired. Would have noticeable issues if condition was still there.
