It indeed does.

A couple of tricks I recall are to remove the plastic vent from the back of the door shell so you can reach up inside to help adjust things as you work. (If you have very early model doors these just have punched louvers there so that's a no-go)

When I install the handles I have the actuator rod attached to the handle (the longer one that just pokes down into the latch) and carefully guide it down into the latch as I wiggle the handle into place, starting with the protruding mechanism below the lock wiggled into the handle opening.

After that's in place you should be able to reach in through the vent and hook the rod in place for the lock pawl.

Yeah, it sucks. It's not impossible.. just work up your best amount of patience and get to it.
