offset to provide clearance for steering box, steering shaft, brake booster or diff. Chev engines were offset back into the 60's depending on the engine/options combination.

I noticed that my 2wd is offset too. The transmission tunnel is also, more foot rooms on the drivers side than passenger.
Yep. I found it this weekend stabbing an L86 in my '94 for the first time. I made motor mounts myself and thought I had really messed up the jig I made off the original 5.7 for a minute. Then I noticed the offset was built into the frame. Then I considered centering it because it would really help with AC compressor mounting. Then I noticed that the trans tunnel in the cab is also offset. So, I guess I'll be notching the frame for my compressor :banghead:
