what would be a code reader for our old trucks. My 89 service engine light comes on when driving over 60mph for 10 min or so. Local pepboys says nothing is popping up on their code reader. The light stays on until I shut the truck off and start it back up. It never comes on around town just when driving a longer distance at higher speeds

You won't find a code reader for OBD1 that's affordable
Just jump the A-B terminal on the ALDL and count the check engine flashes

A paper clip is about the best you can do for OBD1.

Kind of echoing what BIG_KID said here as the MT2500 I bought was a little under $300 at the time. Nifty though as I can use it on all of the junk we have and some OBII stuff.

Your issue sounds a lot like what was going on with my '89 305 TBI Fireturd, EGR. Never saw the light around town but once warmed up and speeds hit 55 or higher for more than a minute or so, pop, light came on and stayed on. Code 32 IIRC. Turns out the intake manifold was all clogged up with carbon. New EGR valve + Edelbrock Performer TBI manifold fixed that.

Check around for an old Autoray EZ-Read 2000
Reads Chevy/Ford/Chrysler OBDI and also OBDII
Was $150 at the time and has worked great on my 91 jeep and 93 blazer
