wanting to make OBS Yukon shine...
Can you clear coat over a 20 year old paint, and have it be worth a damm.
The paint is in good condition, no deterioration, just dulling.
If possible, whats the procedure, cost etc.
Thanks, Ron

The clear that I have always used relies on a chemical bond with the base coat. You aren't going to get that with 20 year old paint. Maybe one of the body guys that do more body work than I do will know of a different kind of clear? I'm guessing that at the very least, you will need to sand the current paint to get the clear to stick. Sanding oem paint on a gmt400 usually gets messy, as the paint turns into chalk... Proceed with caution.

Check YouTube for videos on “repairing” clear coat. They suggest using a 2k clear vs the stuff that you get at autozone.

You’ll get better results from a body shop, obviously, but if the goal is a twenty or thirty footer then a DIY job may be worth looking into.

I think it could be done - why not?
Of course, it depends on the condition of your paint - what do you mean by "dulling"? Just lack of shine (which means the top clearcoat) or actual dulling of the color paint beneath?

I'm guessing you mean the first - in this case, it's just the clearcoat, and you could first try polishing (or hitting it with some compound and then polish) and try to restore the shine this way.

If the clearcoat is too far gone, you can also consider applying some new clearcoat.
Carefully sand the old clear coat a little, then spray 2-3 coats of new clear.

Mine has been flaking for years, I’m seriously thinking about trying to just reclear the panel. I got shop quotes of $8-10k to repaint the whole truck, but don’t think that’s in the budget right now. A scuff and shoot was around $1500.

Sometimes you just want things to look “less crappy”, you know.

I agree with east302.
Again, what is the actual condition of your clear coat?
If the clear has just lost its luster on the top but it's not peeling/flaking off yet, then it's much easier to correct it.

If you have flaking, then you need to be more careful with sanding, try not to damage/sand through the color coat on exposed areas while at the same time make a smooth transition between the "flaked " and "not flaked" areas before you apply new coats of clear. This is more challenging.

And yes - while this can be done by yourself in your driveway, it will be hard to match a proper professional job, but you can definitely at least improve things with some DIY effort and make you truck look better than before.

Oh, that doesn’t look bad. You might try a clay bar and good wax, that would probably help.

I thought your clear coat was peeling...you’ll know it when it does.

Those look like water/mineral stains under the mirror where it drips down.
