Does anyone know if the ac controls with out the max ac button work on a truck with the max ac button?

from what i found in lmc the unit with max on it is the replacement for the original 3 speed heater control unit, the max is 4 speeds

My brothers 88 A/C switch started acting up. He got a used one with "Max" and it was a direct plug in deal. It has been in there for aver a year.
