I'm stumped. I have a friend looking to buy a GMT400, it's a 1996 K1500, it's listed as having the 6.5 Diesel. What I am wondering is: Was that an option on a 1/2 ton truck? I am kind of thinking this might have been a swap, but I am not for sure as I don't know too much about the history of diesels in these trucks.

Here it is.

6.5 diesel very clean truck and in great shape 4x4 works great, the only thing is the overdrive in the transmission locks out , interested in other trades don't have the time to work on it still drives great just uses a bit more diesel on the highway cause the overdrive doesn't kick in. Truck is loaded.

1996 Chevy C/K 1500

Kilometers 260000
Transmission Automatic
Colour Burgundy
Drivetrain 4 x 4
Fuel Type Diesel

Anyone have any ideas? What would be a good offer if it was diesel from the Factory?

They did exist, they were basically a 3/4 ton truck. Almost no difference. But the 1500s did have diesel, they just weren't produced like the 3/4 and 1 tons were.

Stock 1500 front end won't handle the diesel, they are also 2500. The payload capacity, is basically all that makes it a 1500. Did you decide on the purchase yet Shawn?

they were the s code L56 motor in the 1500, basically the same as the f code L65 used in the 3/4 and 1 ton other than the s code had the egr system, the chassis is pretty much the same as the 7200 gvw(6 lug) light duty 3/4 ton(uses same parts as 1/2 ton except has the 9.5 rear), now if it was the 1500 suburban then it got the 8 lug and regular 3/4 ton stuff like the 9.25 ifs which is 8600 gvw 3/4 ton and 1 ton and had the 8 lug 9.5 rear.

yes it is the 1/2 ton/7200gvw 3/4 ton 8.25 ifs

97PROSHOZ71, if no overdrive then its either gone into limp mode or your ecm coolant sensor(in coolant crossover by thermostat) may be bad telling it that the engine is cold and keeping it from going into o.d.and worst case you have a actual problem with the o.d. itself
