93 4x4 nv3500 input shaft bearing?

Can the input shaft bearing be replaced without splitting the case on a 1993 4x4 nv3500? Strange how common the transmissions are but not much info on the net about working on them.

Tin can transmission, when it breaks, replace or upgrade it.

Other then the nv4500 what manual 5 speed 4x4 trans should I replace it with? Because I have a 4500 in my 1 ton and its fine for heavy truck but probably not the best choice for a v6 truck.
