So, Ive got a 1992 K1500 Suburban 5.7 with 144k

Im getting smoke intermittantly... usually in the morning, but also when Ive been out driving for a while I will see a cloud behind me as I take off from a stop.

I am also around a quart low after about 500 miles.

Havent pulled all of my plugs yet. But the two I got to on lunch today looked normal.

I put a compression gauge on there and got a variety of readings on the same cylinder. Im sure I am doing something incorrectly. I got as low as 90psi and as high as 130psi on the same cylinder within 3 minutes. I got the same on the other cylinder I tested (90/120/90/120) I cant imagine it would vary that much.

What is the proper procedure for testing compression with a gauge?

Also, is there another way to test if my rings are bad, or if it is in the valves?

Thanks!

Any leaks from the pan, timing cover, oil filter adapter, oil cooler lines?
