Im looking for a replacement for my nv3500 and found a 1996 NV4500 for $400 but it has almost 200k miles on it. The seller says hes never driven it but it goes thru the gears fine and all gears are tight with no issues. Also includes the bellhousing.
Is there anything in particular I should look at or should I pretty much expect it to need a rebuild with so many miles?

Could need new blocker rings and /or shift fork pads. I think those are the top two items to replace.

I've been searching for a 4500 to replace my 3500 too, with no luck yet. The 4500s are almost indesructible, biggest issue is losing 5th gear which is supposed to be a bigger issue with the dodge version fron what I read. If it feels like it turns freely and smooth in every gear I'd prolly go for it

5th gear nut backs off and seems to go into 5th..then sticks in 5th...seems to primarily happen on Diesel applications...but there is a permanent fix for it available.

Install a new nut and then score the threads with a chisel so it can't back out.

An old timers tale, dunno if it's an actual fix or no.

We always weld the nut after a rebuild. Most of the time the if any thing gets wore out on the trans, it almost always has to come down to replacing the shaft so really no harm for welding the nut.

My dad's gonna assist me in rebuilding a nv4500 when i find one. Welding sounds even better.

Just look for 3/4 and one tons with a small block or 6.5, they are out there, just a matter of finding them when the owner has no idea what they have
