My 95 k1500 won't shift out of park. The transmission fluid is full and looks good (not sure how old it is). My brake lights are turning on, so I am assuming this rules out the brake light sensor. I am not sure if that is correct. Can anyone give me ideas on what to check?

thanks

What do you mean by, "it won't shift out of park"?

Is the column shifter stuck?

Is the transmission "locked" in park?

Or are you able to move the column shifter but when shifing into Rev or a forward range position, the vehicle doesn't move?

You need to provide more specifics...

I am not able to move the column shifter out of park. The column shifter is moving, but when I try to shift it won't go into any gear including neurtral. I first noticed it a couple days ago. It was stuck for a bit and then went into gear. Now I am not able at all. My fear is the transmission is locked.

A little more detail, when I try to move the column shifter, I am feeling resistance like it does not want to go into gear.

probably separated/broken cable underneath the truck, gotta check the cable under the truck. crawl under the drivers side and you'll see where the cable attaches to the shift lever on the transmission itself. somewhat of a common problem.

That's not always accurate. One went bad on mine and the lights would come on, but the shift interlock solenoid would not release and could not shift out of park. New switch fixed it. If it's solenoid related you should still be able to shift with the ignition off (not lock) as the solenoid will not have power to it. You can also unplug it to make it release

I still don't have a clue as to what you're trying to say but agree with the other suggestions - get underneath the truck, disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission itself then take a wrench or pair of pliers and attempt to manually move the selector shaft into one or more of the other detent positions (reverse, neutral, drive4, etc)...Do this with the rear wheels off the ground and fronts either chocked/immobilized or also off the ground.

If you can manually move the selector shaft into the other range positions, your problem is not in the transmission itself.

I fixed it. I figured I would just try replacing the brake light switch. That was the problem. I am a little confused as the brake lights were still working.

while it is a single switch, there are multiple contacts inside. my '07 GMC sierra cruise control was inop due to a faulty brake pedal switch, but everything else was fine.
