I wanted to make my exhaust tips removable. The leaf spring hits the exhaust where it exits out the side when the truck is a lift. So I thought I pair of v band clamps would solve the issue. been a couple months since I had the v bands installed and recently need to put the truck on a lift. Ran into some problems. One of the clamps is welded onto the flange. Also the exhaust pipe sticks out of the flange. Plus they only put one hanger on the whole exhaust, right at the tips. So if I remove the tips the whole exhaust hangs on the manifolds untill the muffler hits the trans crossmember. Supposed to be a good exhaust shop that’s been a round for 20 years. The more I look at the exhaust I just see lazy work and bubblegum welds.

Its normal to hang one pipe slightly out of the v-band clamp. As long as the other half has its pipe recessed. It helps align the clamps and improves sealing. They make interlocking v-bands that have a lip and corresponding groove, but that is a cheap effective way of doing it.

Having worked on turbine engines, it's the wrong way to do it. When done correctly v-band clamps seal well enough on their own. You also don't weld the v-band to the flange. When you install the clamp, you snug the nut, then tap as well of 360* around the clamp as you can with a small plastic hammer, and then tighten again. A lot of people don't know that step and end up blowing out the gasket when the clamp shifts and loosens.

I gave the shop a chance to fix their work. Take a look at the new exhaust hangers they made. I haven’t unbolted the v bands to see if they fixed the clamp n flushed the pipe. If you’re going to have the pipe stick out of the flange at least make it a clean cut. I won’t be going back

That sucks. I definitely sympathize, I've been there before and it is not a good feeling. The gut instinct is always to have the original shop make it right, but 99% of the time the best option is to take the loss as a lesson and go somewhere else. If that's the kind of work they do (especially on attempt number two) I wouldn't want them touching my vehicles ever again.
