stalled when trying to restart starts cranking normal then acts as if timing way advanced

Check your batterie cables. Had the same problem with my 88 350. The negative cable to engine was loose and the bolt holding it was striped.

I know this thread may be dead at this point, but I just bought a starter for my truck (95, 5.0 truck), and it came with a tsb from GM that said if you run into an issue similar to this, that you should replace the crank sensor and retry, because there was an issue where it would advance the timing about 50 degrees, Jack the cylinder pressure through the roof, and could break the nose of the starter or the block from the torque of the engine backfiring. Just a piece of information I have, that I thought I would share.
