Apologies if it's been posted, saw threads that came close but none addressed my exactly question so here goes:
Got a 1996 GMC c1500 4.3L 5 speed with maybe a billion miles on it. Noticing a lot of play when I turn the drive shaft before the rear gives resistance (e-break on, trans in neutral) - about 1/6th, 1/5th turn.
Thinking my rear is completely shot although there's no noise, clunking etc, but there was tons of noise when I bought the truck because the diff was basically dry. I don't have the tools/skills/time to do my own rebuild kit, I bet i'd screw up the lash too, etc. I can however do a swap, only issue is all the junkyards only have the 3.42. I don't really mind the 3.08, I know it's a slug but I'd swap that in to limit headaches. Here's the big question, if I do swap the 3.42, do I have to do a tune? If so (ugh), any advice there? Find a shop, find a program, etc - seems to be the only real gotcha with this job though if there are more please don't keep it to yourself
Thanks in advance everyone!
Edit: well actually I took a vid (took a gif?) of the play - would this cause any alarm to you good folks? No clunking, no noise since I filled the thing with gear oil https://media.giphy.com/media/a3hqIboWAZRvmXtfbk/giphy-downsized-large.gif
