Was exactly what I was thinking. I usually avoid 'em for most things but the smooth (no trim holes) paintable diesel bumper is decent quality and I've bought 3 of 'em.

growing up I built BMX bikes like you all build these trucks. I always stripped them down to metal, primed and painted pretty much every one to my taste.

everytime I tried to paint chrome it always eventually flaked off. like every damn time.

I have absolutely no formal training in painting just experience.

I have never tried to actually remove chrome but I can show you what a rim looks like after the chrome has flaked off, it looks like shìt. Actually I guess those are aluminum rims and steel would be different.

I wonder what a body guy would do to cover chrome?

It's already been said. Paint doesn't stay attached to it even with a quality 2 component etch primer. Sandblashing doesn't remove chrome. Paint is short lived. When a rock chip occurs the edges left behind are usually loose so it's a ever increasing hole in the paintwork that is difficult to feather-edge for a repaint.

I too was into bmx bikes and was the neighborhood kid always fixing other's bikes. I gave up on painting chrome at that age as well. It just doesn't hold up well.

Seems like I do everything the harder, more expensive way!

Isn’t it weird how: if you want stuff to stay chrome, you have to send it off to rechrome, but if you want something UNchromed… IMPOSSIBLE!:Stupid Me::Stupid Me::Stupid Me:
Know how it goes. I always find hard way to do **** too then hour later "damn I coulda done it this way instead."

Not impossible but a lot of the smaller chrome shops that rechrome stuff have gone out of business due to EPA permits and reg's surrounding the chemicals used.
