Whoever has swapped a 383, does the 4l60e hold up? Especially a high mileage one? Or has everyone just refreshed the transmission when they engine swap.

My 4l60e still shifts great. It has 208k on it and is original. My 350 still runs great but would love to swap a 383 into truck someday. Guessing my high mileage 4l60e should be refreshed at same time.

I live at 7k elevation so I could use some more hp and tq since you loose 3% per 1k feet = 21% hp and tq loss. Of course a supercharger or turbocharger would fare better.

shortly after i got mine i wiped out my stock 4L60E. granted she had 176K on it. it didn't help much that return line blew on the highway and i lost all the fluid....lol. i don't think it would have held up for very long in any case.......

so i got a GM crate 4l70E......i went that route because it'll hold 495 LB FT, has the same 3.06 first gear and the .70 overdrive.........Hughes made me a custom torque converter for my purpose and i now have what i'd consider a real bulletproof drive train.........till i kill the 10 bolt.....LMAO. a semi-floatin 14 bolt is the next thing she'll need.....that's will take care of the brakes at the same time.

run your trans till it blows.......

OK, I know this thread is old, but I've been investigating an HT383E for a replacement in my '97 K2500 Sub, and came across this thread.
One of the posts talked about the valves being the same size between the 1/2 and 3/4 tons.
Now, I guess that they are on the Vortec heads, but when I pulled the heads on my old '94 K3500, (9200 GVW,) for a valve job, the shop asked me if they were from a marine engine.
Those heads did have valves with larger stems, they were 3/8 instead of 11/32, and there were rotators on both the intake and exhaust, and insert valve seats,, the engine also had a windage tray in the valley, so that engine was diff from the "normal" engine in a 1/2 ton.
Another thing about the HT that sets it apart from the usual stroker-rebuild is that it not only uses a forged crank, but, the HT crank is a 3.8 stroke with a stock 4.000 bore, instead of boring-out a block and using a 3.750 crank like the common rebuilders do.
Anyway, I do like the idea of the HT for an engine swap,, but Chevy sure doesn't give them away.

Most the info I read says the HT383E motor is a direct swap for a 350, but mostly says in 1/2 ton trucks.... ...My truck is a ‘99, CCLB K3500. It is absolutely all stock, with a NV4500 5 speed and 350 motor, with 345,000 miles on it... ...really hope to add more power over the 5.7, using the 383 if truly it is a candidate for my truck.
The HT383E will FIT just fine.

GM is not saying it will meet emissions and durability requirements when installed in heavier vehicles than a 1500.

Good luck.

Not running a HT383E, but I built an aluminum head 383 with a bigger cam than what comes in the HT383E. Its a healthy little engine.

Very nice. Jw because I'm curious if these engines idle louder then the 350... mine sounds like a brand new duramax. I get the oil pump being loud but I feel like I hear rockers or something threw the grille... just wanted to know anybody who has this set up did they notice that by any chance

The one I messed with 10 years ago was a little louder than the stock 350 but I think alot of that has to do with the fact it has a longer stroke and higher piston speeds but who knows. Mine is a little louder than normal because of the 1.7 roller rockers and Rhoads V-Max lifters.

I figured that but just wanted to confirm it lol.. last thing I want is to screw up the motor by neglecting it. Think the valves need to be adjusted or most likely no? Just asking cause of break in habits
