I replaced the 305 in my 90 Silverado with a rebuilt 305 (Very stupid on my part) and now I need something with a lot more pep and power. What's my best low cost alternatives ? rebuilt 350 or 383 or ? I already installed shorty headers, gibson exhaust and a Edelbrock 4301 TBI aluminum intake on the 305.

Low cost is relative, but I've been looking to put a 383 in mine for a while, I don't really want to go with a full crate motor, I just want the extra displacement of a 383. I'm fortunate that I was able to find another vortec 350, bored it .030 over and am putting a stroker kit in it with a compression of 9.5:1. That'll be plenty of power for me. If you're not able to rebuild an engine, a 383 will run you around 2000 new, probably about the same if you pay somebody to rebuild yours. You can just go the used route as mentioned before, a 350 isn't hard to find for under a grand, it really depends on your budget, your skill level, and how much time and tools you have on hand.

A 383 stroker kit is $600 and up. Your best budget solution is to rebuild a 350 with just a hone job. If it needs boring, go ahead and jump to a stroker, but honestly, you can probably score a clean 350 block for free-ish. If you have a clean 350, you'll get more power from good aftermarket heads than from a stroker kit.

BUT

If your long-term goal is maximum power, do the stroker kit now. You can always do heads later.

Best low cost is rebuilt 305 vortec heads and a vortec carb intake.
But low cost is all relative, Summitracing has brand new GM 383 blocks for $1300, or remanufactured vortec .030 blocks for $800.

That's hard to believe, I was just at the summit page and I didn't see anything, (Power wise) for less than $2000. But once I get past $2000 there seems to be quite a few, on the Jeg's speed pages there's ATX engines, and at Chevrolet performance site everything there is at or above $2900.00 and on to $5.000. I didn't see any 383's, but of course I need to spend $3.000 which I don't currently have in my budget right now ! Thank you !

Any Non-GM crate engine you buy, you'd better figure out how they handle warranty repairs and warranty replacements.

You're not saving any money if you have to remove the engine, pay ship it back to them, and hope they fixed it when you get it back again. If they allow fixing it locally, do they pay for gaskets and fluids? Is the allowable shop hourly labor rate reimbursement reasonsable? Do they pay for your rental vehicle while the shop is waiting for them to send parts?

GM crate engines cost more, but warranty service is as close as the nearest GM dealer.

By my reading, the GM crate engine warranty is a "Start-up" warranty that is only good for 30 days when sold over the counter and not installed by a GM dealer or qualified independent shop. So keep that in mind.

This is what I was talking about but it sounds like your on a strict budget.

If your 305 runs good, the 305 vortec heads , vortec carb intake with Tbi adapter preferably the GM one used on 454 Tbis, and maybe a mild cam, like the smallest Lunati Voodoo cam, will really wake it up. 305 vortecs are rated at 225 hp, more than 350 Tbis so those heads are pretty good.
