What year is your truck if it's 88-92 you have a 700R4. And they can be built to take power. How 93-94 as far as I know are the same 95 is a stand alone year. 96-99 have the black box ecu and is completely different again.
The wiring changes going from 4L60E to 4L80E are super easy can can be done almost completely on the transmission plug side of the harness. You just have to remove one pin/wire and move another. The pinout and changes necessary can be found here:

The only other thing you need to do is add two wires from two specific pins on your PCM for the input speed sensor on the 4L80E. You can download a factory service manual for your year truck here (thanks to @hatzie) which will have pinouts for the PCM connectors. Find which two are labeled as the transmission input speed sensor and connect your wires to those two pins.

700r4 and 4L60 are the same transmissions - GM just changed the nomenclature to the 4L60 platform sometime in 92 IIRC.
my truck is a 1992, with the 4l60 (not e). I think, after reading of the madness of going from a 700r to a more modern 4l80e, I'd prefer a stouter 700r.
I found these guys, wonder how good of a build they do (?)
