93+ is the best TBI PCM. Used with the 5.7 and a 4L60E or 4L80E. For a 4L80E from a 700r4 you have to add 16 wires and a later model VSSB with two speed signal outputs. Not a big deal IMO. Well worth the durability of a 4L80E over a junk ass 700r4 or 4L60E.
So, since 93/94 4L60E is different than a 95 4L60E, and 93,94,95 are different than all other 4L60E’s and 93,94,95 pcm’s are different than 1996 and later, I’m thinking the 4L80E may not be a plug in affair.
I have a 1993 and I’d like to put a 4L80 in but I was told the electrical was different than my 4L60e.
I would appreciate anyone with firsthand experience on a 1993 or 1994. thanks

is it as easy as replacing the 1992 PCM with a ..say..1996 PCM?

It would be easier to have your PCM tuned to control the 4L80E and add the necessary wiring like L31Max mentioned. The newer '96+ black box PCMs are completely different and you would have to re-pin your entire wiring harness at the PCM connectors. If you were going that far I'd consider an 0411 PCM swap.

If your PCM is not capable of being tuned to run the 4L80E for some reason, then you could pull one from a '93-'95 4L80E truck in a salvage yard. I don't see why yours wouldn't be compatible though. I just have no first hand experience doing this in the TBI trucks so I can't say for sure. You could probably get a definitive answer from someone on the Gearhead EFI Forums. Here's a link. This would also be a good place for help finding someone for tuning assistance, which you will need to unlock the full potential of your future engine build regardless of what you end up doing with the transmission.

The wiring changes going from 4L60E to 4L80E are super easy can can be done almost completely on the transmission plug side of the harness. You just have to remove one pin/wire and move another. The pinout and changes necessary can be found here:

https://sites.google.com/site/sloppywiki/everything-ls/4l80e-info

The only other thing you need to do is add two wires from two specific pins on your PCM for the input speed sensor on the 4L80E. You can download a factory service manual for your year truck here (thanks to @hatzie) which will have pinouts for the PCM connectors. Find which two are labeled as the transmission input speed sensor and connect your wires to those two pins.

see it all the time around here.. they build them all up, but cant make them run right,, these trucks WERE NOT BUILT TO RACE. They are a working mans truck, towing, hauling, farm work, construction, reliable and raw unrefined torque at low end and a happy ears flapping in the breeze cruising speed.. If you want to get 300 plus, I would get a package crate engine ls motor with the computer.. the computers in these trucks are programmed to operate in specific block parameters.. even if u do find someone to tweak the programming, if u have a problem, will u be able to have them help u sort it out later? I would say put headers on it, with true duals, and enjoy it. These are GREAT trucks as is,, not panty waist sissies. GET IN,,, SLAM THE DOOR TWICE, FIRE IT UP, HEAR THE RUMBLE, SEE THE PUFF OF SMOKE COME OUT THE TAIL PIPE, AND LET THE HORSES RUN. If u get tired of seeing the puff of smoke, change the valve stem seals.

I don't understand what the concern is if someone wants to modify their own truck. Its my truck. If you disagree with what I want out of it, I don't care. I'm not in your thread telling you that you suck lemons because you're content with 210 hp. I wouldn't do that, its your truck and I don't care what you do with it.
