1- Auto or manual?

2- Which transmission was it? (check the glove box)

3- What engine do you have and what size is the the truck? (1/2, 3/4, 1 ton)

I believe that 96 97 and 98 are all compatible for the most part, but you'll need to know what to look for.

If your 98 is a 1/2 ton, it would of came with a 4L60E. A transmission from 96 to 99 will fit without any mods. You have to make sure you get a 4L60E (E) for electronically controlled. If you were to get a 4L60 or a 700R4, it wouldn't work because the computer controlled trucks don't use Throttle valve (TV) cables.

Here are a couple good transmision websites that you can buy a good Transmission for:

As mentioned above, the 4L60E is the transmission that you will need for the least work. 1998 would be the ideal year to get a tranny out of.

If you wanted a beefier tranny, as the 4L60E is not reputed as a very sturdy tranny (I have one in mine, haha), I would suggest moving up to the 4L80 or NV4500- both a bit more work involved, but much beefier.

When you buy a trans, you are gona wanna look for a 2 piece 4l60E. I read somewhere it was better than a 1 piece.

Same here, that's why I suggested it. It's the heavy duty manual transmission. There are several guys on here who have done the swap. Takes time and work, but is one heck of an upgrade.
