Hey, I have a 1996 Chevy Cheyenne 1500, my transmission won't shift anymore, so I'm wondering what transmission can I use to replace it with the least amount of work. It has a 4.3 vortec v6, all stock

A 4L60E from 96-98 is a 100% fit, others may chime in with other options. For some reason they changed a few things with the trans over the 92-95 years so you want to ensure you don’t swap in the wrong version.

Any 1996-1997 4L60E would work, assuming you have a 4L60E in there (and not a manual trans). Make sure you either reuse your current tc or have it rebuilt.

Do not buy anything 1993-1995 at all or any of the two piece cases 98+ w/the LSX/Gen3 SBC bolt pattern (01+ for trucks).

ETA: Ideally, stick to a 1997 model year 4L60E as GM replaced the crack-prone aluminum apply pistons in the forward drum with the bonded steel and rubber pistons which are vastly superior, in 1997 for all years 97+.

Wouldn’t you be afraid that there might be trash in the old converter? As cheap as they are I would just get a new TC.

Maybe - he'd have to look at the fluid and partially drain the converter, all things he would do once the trans/tc is out. If the fluid has metal or other debris in it, he can have the converter rebuilt.
