transmission problem (shift light)

my co-worker has a 97 gmc 1500 and the trans shift light will go out and then dim real low and he will lose power. the truck seems like it loses power when the light goes dim but when its lite up and drives fine. he replaced the cluster but it still acts up, any ideas.
