Nope. Wikipedia was WRONG on this. (I updated)

1985 or 1986 depending on who you talk to. The first Vortec was the 90 degree 4.3L V6 as used in the light-duty trucks. I'm seeing references to 1986 being the first year, but they were available in '85-model-year vehicles such as Astro and 1/2- and 3/4-ton pickups. (Which might mean that the Vortec engine was available in late 1984, as an early-production '85 model-year vehicle.
