How do you identify externally a 4L80E on a 96 2500 2wd with 5.7

I have a chance to buy one real cheap and guys says its a 4L80E(TH400 with an OD) but I say its a 4L60E. Some say it could be a 4L60 as well. can you tell by the VIN what trans it has?

Easy way to tell quickly is to look at the sides, a 4l60e has one speed sensor back by the tail shaft on the rear driver side of the trans and the main electrical wiring harness hooks up the passenger side behind an exhaust heat sheild. On a 4L80E there are 2 speed sensors on the drivers side of the trans, one above the PRND321 indicator unit, and one toward the tail shaft, and the main wiring harness hooks up on the drivers side also, they are very easy to identify once you learn the difference.
