I've really been considering buying this crate 383 from GM:

My original plan was to put in a t56 to replace my NV3500 when I finally get around to dropping in a new engine, but then I got to wondering if an NV4500 would also be a good option. My reasoning is that with a 4500, my shifter location would be in pretty much the same place as the 3500, so i wouldnt have to hack another hole in my floor, and I would assume that an NV4500 swap would be a little bit more straightforward, but I could be wrong on that. I don't do much towing, other than occasionally hauling my 13ft camper, so that's not a big concern. Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

The NV4500 will probably be the strongest option. The T56 may be fine for just driving around, but I'm not sure how well it will hold up to any towing.

How do you intend to drive/use the truck? You say you're not going to tow a lot, so is it safe to assume you're installing the 383 so you can play?

If so, the NV4500 is not a good choice. It's tough as nails and awesome for towing, but despite the special carbon-fiber synchros (IF it still has the originals, which they can already very easily have been replaced with bronze) it still has a very heavy shift feel. You won't be power-shifting through the gears on an NV4500. Also, it's just 5 speeds, and when you consider the low gear is practically useless unless you're trying to get a heavy load moving, what you really have is a 4 speed w/overdrive.

T56's were offered in torque ratings from 330 lb-ft up to 550, all depends on application; look here for some ideas on where to search for a strong version: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warner_T-56_transmission

You got that right! Mainly just looking to play around with my truck. Looks like a T56 might suit my needs a bit better. Thanks for the info guys!
