So, would you use a 36.5 ford dana 60??

Have found a dana 60 from a 90 f-350. Have been told they are less desireable due to width. I'd be running max of 38's.

For my 98 rc/lb.

Thx

a buddy of mine runs one with 42 iroks and i dont think he is having that many problems.. if you plan on big meaty tires they realy arent the best choice imo but if its all you can afford/find then do what you gotta do

but think of all the superdoodies out there running big tires. they all have 36.5 width axles

Backspacing and wheel size will be your limiting factor from what I've read (back in the day).

works fine.

mine is out of a 1987 f-350 36.5"
but b/s is key, big lugs will hit the springs. The 36.5" axle is actually a little stronger than some of the mid 70's dana 60's decause the inner shafts don't neck down close to the carrier. if i remember right.

I have a 36.5 in mine out of an 88 F350 and it is ok...I run 40x15.50x20's with no issues and 4.5" backspacing. No rubbing on the leaves what so ever. Though you may have some issues with some rubbing of shackles on the frame. I've got another one from a 78'
F250 that I am going to swap to if I don't link the front of mine this winter. And if I do then like has been said, I'll keep my 88 version for the better axles and sell the other.

Correct, although it's arguably a moot point since the real weak link seems to be the stock 30 spline outers on either vintage.

dana 60's are great
plenty of em around too
That's not really the question that the OP was asking. He was asking whether it would be beneficial to find a 77.5-79 version for the narrower spring pad width of 32.5".
