smells really bad

i just blew the tranny in my 1996 c 1500 it also broke the ring gear its a 305 4l60e one piece housing it has 400 plus thousand kls i have a rusty 1998 c 1500 that has a amazing running 305 4l60e 2 piece trans im thinking about swapping the whole works into the 1996 ive read on here about the ground wire that needs to be added for the trans just wanted to clarify something i have the trans plug from the 1998 if i pull the tranny pan will i see the ground wire inside that will allow me to pin it and using the 1998 plug do i ground that to anything special
