has anyone converted their rear drums to rear disc brakes all the threads I see are old. They say you can use 78 caddy calibers, 96 impala as rotors(stud holes drilled out to lager diameter), and I'veseen weld on brackets for 10 bucks , and braided lines. Has anyone done this!? Is it that easy? Do you need anything else?

I've contacted a few people on this forum and I guess they aren't around anymore, I've gotten no response from any. My brakes act like the self adjuster is not adjusting at all. I can tighten them down and 2 days later it sound like a train stopping. It's like they are barely making contact. A lil help would be great.

Usually, it's front rotors from a Squarebody, I think. I've not heard of drilling rotors from an Impala. I've also heard the Caddy calipers, that have the parking brakes aren't really up to the job.

I've seen mention of hogging out the stud holes on Impala rotors. Not sure what the other parts used with that are.

For the parking brake, the trick setup would be one of those pinion-mount discs, universal kits you can probably find all day long on Speedway's site.

Once you start tinkering with your brakes though remember it's a system, not just a collection of various parts. You put some calipers out back, you need to change the master cylinder to a disc/disc unit. You'll likely need to change your proportioning valve or install an adjustable one. Your ABS unit will become irrelevant and you'll want to plumb around it, because you won't be getting it to work the way it's supposed to.

I've looked at the expensive kits, and they bolt right up. No mention of plumbing around abs system.

So...get that kit? If it's the SSBC kit I've read dozens of complaints of poor braking power from it.

Not sure what your point is with that statement since you seem to be wanting to do a piece-together setup, which takes work and lots of experimenting, to get good results.

question is do you want direct bolt on or do you have some machining fab skills. by far the best is the nbs disc swap i think they have 14" rotors. or swap the whole rear thats another way to go. 10 bolts have so many options its insane, squarebody front brakes, caddy brakes, just about anything can be made to fit anything but as far as bolt on "kits" go your limited.

the last 14 bolt nbs disc rear brake swap we did looked nice, functioned a bit better than drums but i didnt bother when i swapped my rear to a 14 bolt. pretty much the only difference is it looks better and convinces yourself to some degree you have more stopping power because most people cant properly adjust drums.

I put a kit together using 79 cadi calipers and it stops on a dime. Parking brake works great and the abs actually eliminates the need for a proportioning valve so don't plumb around it. I also installed a NBS master cylinder at the same time.
