I am wanting to up-grade my 1998 Cheyenne's sound system. I have started with some new Kicker speakers but the stock radio isn't powerful enough to run them at high volumes. I am looking at the RetroSound Newport http://www.retrosound.com/product-p/newport.htm since I want to keep as much of the stock look as possible but don't know much about the company. Anyone use them before or know anything about them, or have any other ideas? Thanks.

I wanted to do the same thing and retain the stock look but I had to give up. I've heard good things about RetroSound, but they are really high priced. You can get more capabilities from a $50 name brand radio than that unit. There are very few 1.5 DIN units out there that aren't either terrible or extremely basic and overpriced.

I ended up buying a Sony unit for $70 that has handsfree calling, bluetooth music streaming, and a great high res display (for a radio). I'm very happy with it, and wish I pulled the trigger sooner. See my build thread for specifics:

it would be cheaper to hook up an amplifier then over pay for that head unit.

I looked at doing that. Just not sure how to go about doing so since I know the stock unit doesn't have a pre-amp output

you need a line output converter.

I ran my subs on a stock radio, way back when i had a stock radio until the CD player gave out.

check out Crutchfield.com they sell converters, you can also chat with specialist online that will help you with picking out an amp and wiring it all up.

X2. You need something like this.

Be aware though, Crutchfield is a great place to shop but they are definitely not the cheapest for most things. Here's the same item on eBay from a reputable seller, brand new.

There's a few on eBay used right now for around half that price as well.

I agree that the Retrosound units are actually very nice. I've installed them in a few other vehicles with great results. Not sure why they get a bad rep from so many people on here...

If you want to save a few bucks and keep stock look you could always leave the old unit in as a dummy and stash a new head in the glovebox. Most new stereos have Bluetooth and sat and what not so you don't need to use the buttons on the front that much. There are ways, like others mentioned, to make the old one work with an amp and all that but how long will it last before things stop working
