Open air cleaner vs cold air intake

I currently have an open air cleaner and was thinking about switching to a CAI system. The main reason I was thinking about switching because with offroading I have seen that my air cleaner is wet and possible sucking water but will I get the same or better air flow out of a CAI with a 3 or 4 inxh pipe connecting the carb hat? with a cai it can be run to the right fenderwell which will pull in cooler air and with it boxed in like most units are it will be further protected from water
