Have I asked a pretty dumb question? I understand the counter shaft journal can be different. I was wondering about input bearings and retainer.

I dont know the answer but if you can find the bearing number for each style bellhousing and look at the deminsions you should have your answer. Its not that its a stupid question but its probably a little out of most of the members relm of knowledge.

The bell housing on the nv3500 is not removable. If we're talking about a 92 3500 as your user name suggests, you have a nv4500.

A complete NV3500 with an internal or external slave-that came off off a cast iron small block will fit. And the external slave works. Be careful with the routing the line to the slave. Convert to aeroquip style with threaded ends.
I've been running a '95 NV3500 with an NP241 behind a 489 for 3 years without an issue. Make sure your rear drive shaft is spot on correct length. Another issue you will see is different output spline count if 4x4 or 4L80.
No doubt an NV4500 is stronger, but it lacks the gear splits and "feel" of a 3500 . My Sub feels like a 6000 lb Camaro. Pleasure to drive.
If you're doing an auto-to-manual, find a correct year donor for the dinky bits pedals...etc.
It'll bolt in...good bit of work. Don't forget the pilot bearing!
