Is there anyway to check for compression while engine is out of vehicle. I have a 1998 Yukon 5.7 vortec L31. And looking to purchase a used engine because I’m running low on money.

^^^ Yup. I've done that. Be sure there's oil in the pan, and the engine is upright.

Works good on "most" GMs; but engine families that have the starter bolted to the bellhousing instead of the engine (Ford, Chrysler) will require the bellhousing to be attached, complicating things.

You could certainly do a leakdown test on it w/o concern for a starter & battery.
