They are not the stoutest tranny but the Getrag can be ok, ours was. It is a bit heavier than the nv3500 IMO but quite a bit lighter than the nv4500. If you can get an nv4500 then it is the best option.

Getrag was found mostly in 88-91 1500s and 2500s. If one went out it was typically swapped for a more common sm465.

465 is the 4 speed granny low no o/d bullet proof box.

Unless you want to be one of the first to install a nv5600 6 speed in a gmt400 I'd keep looking for a nv4500.

After a ton of reading since my last post till now, I did find that it was called ZF6, available from 01 to 07 in the duramax/8.1 engine on the chevys. Also available in the fords from 98+... But im curious to know... will that transmission mate to a 454? I know it will on a 5.3 and a 6.0, I think to the 6.2 as well... My plans are to run a duramax or a 6.2 in the future. So, im really liking the ZF6 ideer ... that brings me to the question again, will it bolt up? The 454 from my understanding is a Lt engine, correct? And the 5.3, 6.0 and 6.2 are LS right?

Im pretty sure ls and lt engines have bellhousings bolting which would tell me that it will NOT work. I cant find this exact answer though ... im not to worried about the wiring side of thing, I know I can figure that out. But more, will it bolt up, if not, what will it take to. Like you said, it hasn't been done, so I cant find info on it ... but I really like this transmission after all this reading!!!

A dmax bolts up in place of a 6.0 and 6.0 will bolt up in place of a 5.7 and a 454 bolts up in place of a 5.7l so in theory a zf6 will bolt to any of the above.

Ford bellhousing is different you want gm.

Hehe, someone beat me to it on the 1992 issue. :D

You can read a bit about them on the main page at www.nv4500.com as well.

Though this quote from the page caught me a little off guard,

"General Motors applications include it as an option in 3/4 and 1-ton full size trucks with a GVWR of more than 8500 pounds. GM also built about 20,000 (rare) 2WD, 1/2 Ton trucks with a 4.3 V-6, that used an NV4500 to increase their towing capacity."

Yeah. And some even rarer 2WD 1/2 tons with the 5.7 and NV4500. Like my '94 GMC. :D MT8 right there on the SPID label, factory equipment.
