I have this 1998 Chevy 1500 with the 5.7l vortec and 4l60e tranny from a 1995. During my research on here i found the thread "Real differences in the 4l60e by year" it gave me alot of information but did not say if it was safe to use the 1995 trans with the 1998. i want to know what i should do before i have to replace the trans or swap it out??? I'm a high school student that lives on my own and i cannot afford this truck to go down without at least having a backup tranny

So the thing i am wondering is, since 1995 was kind of a goofed up year for GM and the transmission will ultimately burn up in my '98. Would any other year transmission work on it? I called our local shop (Big Jims Towing) and he completely dodged my question by stating "I've been a GM tech for 30 years and we've swapped a '94 into a '98 and it worked perfectly". the question was "Would a '95 work in a '98?". he then proceeded to basically call me bull headed and that i had no idea what i was talking about... Anywho, would the 1994 trans function properly in my 1998? sorry for the long write-up. but i really just need to know before i tear it all apart just to find out it would've worked

From what I have learned, 95 is the in between year, obd1to obd2. Only a 95 trans will work in a 95 truck. 94 would have a TV cable, 98 is all electronic. I don't think it would work. Or at least not a drop in swap.

You need a 98+ trans for it be an easy no modification swap. The 95 could work but you'd have to put 98 guts/wiring in it. 95 was one year only. 96 an 97 can interchange with each other an then 98 to 00 can interchange as well. It has to be a 5.7 trans though not one from a 4.8/5.3.

Cooler lines are different as well. TCC is different and will not work properly. Best to get 97-99 trans.

If money is a huge issue, then take the 3/2 downshift sol out of the 98 model transmission, install it in the 95 model transmission. You can shave the notch off the wiring harness so it will plug in (you will see what I mean when you look at it). The 95 3/2 solenoid ohms at 10-15 ohms. The 98 3/2 downshift is an on/off style solenoid at 20/30 ohms. I would recommend getting a new converter however. Some 95 model had the paper clutch, the 98 needs a carbon. They aren't expensive though.
