I had a similar situation, where I had recently replaced my fuel sender, than shortly after I replaced the pump. A couple weeks later, the gauge was stuck on 3/4 tank and wouldnt move. I finally tore it apart and found that the little float arm fell out of the sender and was just bobbing in the gas tank.
By the way, I have found that the easiest was to do anything in my gas tank is to just remove the bed. Six bolts (short bed fleetside). Unlplug the tail light harness, undo the tailight ground, and ground by the sender when you undo the filler neck. I take the tailgate off, and two people can easily lift my bed off for full access.
