So I’ve been siphoning gas from the old tank and dumping it into the new tank. I turned the key to check the fuel level, it appears the fuel gauge isn’t working. Any suggestions? I matched grey/grey, purple/purple and the two black wires from the truck to the one black wire from new unit.

Sounds like you don't have a good ground. Is the new tank sitting on the ground while you're siphoning? Does the fuel pump work? Maybe run a ground wire from the tank to the frame near the fill pipe?

The new tank is set in its new location, fully mounted, somewhat plumbed and somewhat wired. Still trying to decide on a flat bed or a bobbed bed, so everything is done as far as I’d like without having to redo too much. Haven’t done an intentional ground though, could be my issue.

Here’s the setup I came up with…

The black wire that came with the older style unit was an actual ground. I just tied it together with the two black wires from the trucks harness. Should I splice that black wire and get it over to the frame? Or should I try attaching a totally separate ground to like the filler neck and tap to the frame?

I'd do a separate ground for the sending unit on the frame, and also hook up a vent hose to the port you have capped off, to the one capped off on the filler neck. It will save you hassle filling up.

Yeah, I do plan to run a vent. That’s just temporary, not sure what the filler neck will do or even actually be in final design.

But in regards to the ground…are you suggesting I splice the black wire and ground that? Or run even another ground wire from the sending unit somewhere? You’ll have to excuse my ignorance, wiring is always my least favorite or knowledgeable part when it comes to auto.

Add a splice in the current ground setup and go to the frame with it.
