I had some cheap a$$ fast talking hustler try to sell a diesel Chevy truck with a "good engine".... the sonofabitch jammed trash in the oil filler/breather tube to keep blow by in the motor...
it was so powerfully bad I had to fight to get the filler cap back on.
that guy deserved to be dragged out in the street and shot for trying to pass a $1,000 truck off as an $8,000 truck

needless to say, didn't buy it. I agree its a great pre-purchase check.
you can easily unplug the PVC system though for a "quick-and-dirty" inspection though

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check this out on my 350 TBI. My dad checked compression and Cyl #1 is toast. I don't have the time or money to have it taken apart but this will at least give an indication if it's the rings. It sounds like there is an exhaust leak on the driver's side manifold too so maybe that is indicating a bad valve?

I have a 12v / 6 speed swap in mind also. I have the 6 speed, just need the 12v. ;)

What would you say about the amount of blow by I have goin on?

I would say if the oil pressure is good and its not using much oil, run the piss out of it, my dd has more blow by than that lol. That bein said, that is a fair amount of blow by, nothing a set of rings and bearings won't fix tho.

if your oil smells gasy... yeah, bad. especially if it was new oil a week ago.

I remember my first car... we bolted on some eddelbrock heads to this beat up small block, since the gasket was leaking...and the restored compression of perfectly seated valves and gaskets, blew out the piston rings LOL!!!

id say... undo the filler cap at idle and feel... the PVC system on my truck will pull my palm to a seal on the valve cover... so, even if there IS blow-by in my 350, the PCV is canceling it out... so no problem there *shrugs*
