I'm just gonna leave this here to counter the old men who hate everything:
Every 'waste of time hot air intake' I have ever personally done has improved the flow of the intake, especially at part throttle. Most notably was in my old pt cruiser; that had a fender intake that necked down to the size of a quarter, and going to a large element filter and ditching the stock airbox made a significant difference.
My old tbi 350 gained some, my 4.3 v6 gained quite a bit (but that sits right behind the grill and doesn't get much hot air at all), and my 454 tbi seemed to gain the least, but that engine is just a freakin gutless turd to begin with. Going from a system where the air has to change shape & volume multiple times to a direct intake straight over the throttle body has, in my experience, been worth it.
An aftermarket large bore true cold air intake with 1 bend and no shape shifting would be absolute best but manufacturers want way to much money for those.
My 2c, most will disagree with me and that's okay.
