I had my A/C Compressor replaced when i bought my truck, because it had the wrong one on it. Had a friend who is a mechanic get a used one from some junkyard. He installed it around early june and just about now the compressor seems to only engage when it wants to. Im not sure if some connection is lose or if its because it was used and its on its way out.

Check the pressure switch that connects to the accumulator. Mine used to do this and wiggling the connection always fixed it. Eventually you will need to replace the switch. Don't know what year your truck is. Mine is a 90 Sierra 5.7L

You sure there's enough freon in it..... that can cause it to not engage all the time when it's suppose to also... throw a set of gauges on there and check that first...
