I'm bringing home a 99 tahoe. Roached motor, and comes with a 98 motor out of his buddies rotten, scapped, pickup. My plan is hang it on a stand and freshen it up. Try and replace all the seals and gasket short of pulling the heads. I may pull bearing caps to check them out. Some of the parts say second series or such. Would the 98 be part of the later edition? Here's my shopping list so far. Need to add front main seal and not sure of which rear main.
Thoughts?

DO NOT waste your money on one of those "gimmick" "Fail-Safe" thermostats. MOST folks seem to have the incorrect assumption that they cannot "fail" in the closed position. The rat-bastages in their marketing department deliberately lead folks to that incorrect conclusion.

Does the oil pan gasket set include a drain plug gasket? I bet it does. If that's the case, you don't need the separate drain plug gasket.

Do you have multiple rear main seals in your cart? I'm too lazy to look up those part numbers.

Do these engines use exhaust manifold gaskets? I'm used to old Chevys where the iron manifolds bolted directly to the heads, no gasket.

I would look at the existing oil pumps/screens. Probably nothing wrong with either one that some sandpaper and a piece of glass (for flatness, to back the sand paper with) wouldn't fix.

To close this out, I'll be installing a fresh motor from a local small block guru. Thanks everyone.
