My wife's 97 tahoe needs lower intake gaskets. I've been tossing around the idea of putting in a slightly larger cam and figured when the intake is off would be prime time to do it. How much lift can I add without having to retune the computer and is it really worth the money?

Most folks here agree it's always a good idea to get it tuned - with or without a cam upgrade.

Should really get it tuned,
Lift maxes at .480” unless you change springs or cut the valve seats On the heads. Lift is much less important than the duration.
There’s a few comp cams that are “efi friendly” call them and their tech line will help you. Mainly you will want something that still makes lots of vacuum to keep the computer happy.
