Ok I'm trying to get a friend's truck running. It's been sitting a while and my dad had fired it up about 2 weeks ago now but this past weekend it wouldn't fire up. It just cranks and doesn't want to start. Any ideas what I should look at?

How old is the fuel??
Make sure the lift pump is working for starters. Next chenge that fuel filter.
Also make sure those batteries are fully charged up, slow cranking makes for a hard start on those 6.5s

No clue on age. I know probably 5 6 years old at least. How would I check about the lift pump?

Details about the truck would be a great help
Trucks been sitting for about 6 years. Hasn't been driven or started as far as I know. Has a 6.5 in it. And don't know much else

that is some old fuel.. Try adding some fresh fuel to the mix as well.
as far as the lift pump, turn the key to ON position and listen for a humming sound from the lift pump.
The lift pump is in the frame rail kinda under the drivers seat with two wires going to it. It will run for a couple seconds then shut off once the system is up to pressure.

What year is it? That will help diagnose the problem.

Do you get fuel out of the t valve on the thermostat housing with key turned to on?

I'd hate to see what kind of crap is growing in that 5-6 year old diesel fuel.

92 or 94 is very important to know the exact year; 94 is first year for electronic control of the injection instead of mechanical...very different setup and a whole different host of problems.
