Best oil for a non-vortec carb’d 1992 454 with a mild comp cam, getting read for winter and first oil change since I purchased the truck. Anything else I should do? Truck has about 6,000 miles on new engine.

I run 10w30 in my 454.... I can't see Vortec/non-Vortec making a difference. 5w30 was factory fill, but 10w30 is also approved in the manual. I'd reccomande chanign it more often than you would a fuel injected engine, as I'd guess you'd get more fuel contamination in the oil.... others can possibly back that up or refute that?

Wix filters used to be a good choice. Now you have to inspect every individual filter to see if it's Communist Crap, Polish or other European, or made in USA. Mann + Hummel has largely destroyed Wix.

A carb'd engine absolutely needs the oil changed more frequently than one with feedback fuel injection. There's no point wasting money on expensive oil when someone's crammed a carb onto the thing. And half the carbs don't have properly-functioning chokes, either. Cylinder washdown can be horrific.

Rotela or similar diesel oil since it’s most likely a flat tappet cam. Ac delco filter.

I've been using Citgo Farm & Barn dinno-oil and a Delco filter in my truck since 2000 ...still working fine. 275k mi. I can get it cheaper than about any other oil when it's on sale. I think just about any oil will work ok. The Diesel oil isn't a bad idea either I suppose. Wix/Napa filters are a great product. Sometimes I use them if they come on sale. I use Delco's on GM's and Mopar filters on Mopars. Mopar filters are top notch ...better than the Delco's from what I can see. More expensive too.
